San Severo Chapel
It’s among the most important museums of Naples. Located near Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, this church, now deconsecrated, is adjacent to the Sansevero family palace separated by an alley once topped by a suspension bridge that allowed family members access to privately place of worship.
The chapel houses masterpieces such as the “Cristo Velato”, known worldwide for it’s marble veil that almost hovers over the dead Christ, Modesty and Disillusion, and is a whole complex singular and full of meaning.
It’s also home to numerous other works of fine workmanship or unusual, such as anatomical machines, two bodies completely stripped to the bone where it is possible to see, in great detail, the entire circulatory system.
In addition to being designed as a place of worship, the mausoleum is primarily a Masonic temple full of symbolism, which reflects the genius and charisma of Raimondo di Sangro, seventh prince of Sansevero, client and at the same time the creator of the apparatus of the eighteenth-century art chapel.
